Residency & Fellowship Programs

Resident Group Shot Banner

We’re working to deliver a better experience on our Residency and Fellowship Programs pages, where you’ll learn more about why Gundersen is one of the nation's premier regional academic health centers training the next generation of healthcare professionals. Until then, please email us at [email protected] with any questions.

Looking for a personalized, supportive educational experience? How about great perks and a chance to foster camaraderie with your peers and connect to an organization's purpose and priorities? We were, too. That's why at Gundersen we're proud to have created residency and fellowship programs that prioritize your learning, well-being and career aspirations while generously compensating you for your significant contributions.

Virtual interviews

Health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a concern for so many. Because of this, Gundersen Medical Foundation and Gundersen Health System will conduct all Residency and Fellowship interviews virtually for the 2024-2025 academic year. For additional information, please contact Gundersen Medical Education at (608) 775-2081, toll free at (800) 362-9567, ext. 52081, or [email protected].

Integrity is one of our primary values in medical education at GHS.
Accordingly, we want our residency and fellowship candidates to know that we will not record interviews, as we believe that the interview is a personal experience. Respectfully, we ask that candidates also demonstrate integrity by not recording interviews or sharing interview questions with other applicants.

Educational Experience

You have a chance to evaluate all patients, from common ailments to complex medical problems, along with developing problem-solving skills and expanding your knowledge base and management skills.

Added program value: All Gundersen clinicians contribute to teaching. Teaching is in our mission and exemplified in our corporate vision to enrich every life we touch. Direct teaching may occur at the side of a patient, in classrooms and via role modeling. Indirect support is given when clinicians provide clinic or hospital coverage while their colleagues are teaching; support multidisciplinary teaching within their section or department; and contribute to the culture of education through continuous quality improvement.

Perks

Competitive wages and benefits are vital to the success of any resident and fellowship program. But Gundersen provides so much more. Affordable housing within walking distance of where you will practice and learn on our main campus in La Crosse helps build community and camaraderie among your peers. (Ask us about availability.) Children and significant others are always welcome.

We also work to help you succeed by offering low learner-to-teacher ratios, direct access to program directors, program coordinators and support staff, and attention to your own health and well-being, including home call.

Added program value: Gundersen is one of 10 healthcare organizations nationwide chosen to participate in the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Pursuing Excellence in Clinical Learning Environments, a national learning collaborative focused on engaging residents and fellows in patient safety.

We also want to celebrate with you and honor your achievements. Our annual holiday party and graduation are ways we annually pause, bond and grow as a team.
