During Your Rotation
If you're a medical student visiting Gundersen to advance your education, these resources will help during your time here.
Working here
Communication
It's important to check your email often for updates and schedule changes. Please do not silent your pager.
Scrubs
Your badge will allow you to take out 2 pairs of scrubs, regardless of color. The Student Pyxis Machine is located on 2nd Floor Heritage, just around the corner from E elevators. This is where you will take out and return scrubs.
Do not leave your scrubs in the locker room. This will cause you to lower your garment allowance.
Please refer to the Scrub Wearer Policy if you have any questions on where you can and can't wear scrubs. Ceil blue scrubs may only be worn in restricted areas and never outside of the hospital.
Scrub stations will be loaded with the following scrub colors:
- GI – jade green
- Emergency Services – jade green
- Labor and Delivery – ceil blue
- Peds/Maternal/Peds NICU – ceil blue
- 5th floor OSC – ceil blue
- Central Service – ceil blue
- 2nd floor OR common area – ceil blue and jade green
- 2nd floor OR - ceil blue
Resident schedule
Need to know who is on your resident team or what other departments residents are rotating in? From Gundersen's intranet, visit Internal Sites > Medical Education > Medical Students > Resident Schedule.
Needlestick
In case of a needle stick, page the exposure nurse at pager 3799.
If after hours, please report directly to the Emergency Room.
Our Emergency Department and the exposure nurse know that it is important that the “source patient” be tested within 2 hours (patient allowing) and they know that it is important to have a short turn-around for testing. Students should be tested within 24-48 hours.
Isolation
Please refer to Gundersen's Isolation Policies.
Isolation Precautions: What to do!
Transmission-based precaution signs
- Airborne precaution signs are green
- Contact precaution signs are orange
- Droplet precaution signs are yellow
- Protective precaution signs are purple
Students are not given respirator fit-testing. University policy is that students do not enter rooms of patients in respiratory isolation.

They will document this so that if you do need to be seen, they can notify the insurance provider. It is also important for you to contact the SHIP office if you have been seen so that your bills are processed appropriately.
