Be sure to check your email on a regular basis. Not only will we email you updates, but Madison will as well! We also communicate changes to your schedules via email. This will be important during your rotation. Also, please be sure to keep your pagers on loud, not silent.

Absences
Absence policy
For all foreseen absences, you must request the days off through Madison - send to Gwen or Megan. They will then send the approved absence to the Program Coordinator's at Gundersen. This Absence Request form can also be found on OASIS. Please note the following rules:
- Each student can have up to 5 days off in any one block
- But no more than three days in a row
- You must submit your request at least six weeks in advance
- You will be required to complete make-up work
Not feeling well
Unforeseen absences due to illness during rotation - students need to notify the Program Coordinators in the Medical Education Office. The Medical Education Office will then notify the department.

Have something you need mailed to you while at Gundersen? Send to your housing address! Make sure it's addressed to you. You will receive a mail key with your housing key.

Needlesticks
In case of an accidental needle stick, please page the exposure nurse at pager 3799.
If after hours, please report directly to the Emergency Room for assistance.
Our Emergency Department and the exposure nurse know that it is very important that the “source patient” be tested within two hours (patient allowing) and they know that it is very important to have a short turn-around for this testing. The student should be tested within 24-48 hours.

Isolation Precautions: What to do!
Transmission based precaution signs
- Airborne Precaution signs are green.
- Contact Precaution signs are orange.
- Droplet Precaution signs are yellow.
- Protective Precaution signs are purple.
- If a sign says STOP! do as it says!
Students are not given respirator fit-testing. University policy is that students do not enter rooms of patients in respiratory isolation.

Scrubs
Your badge will allow you to take out 4 garments at a time (2 pairs of scrubs - regardless of color). The Student Pyxis Machine is located on 2nd Floor Heritage, just around the corner from E Elevators. This is where you will take out and return scrubs.
Do not leave your scrubs in the locker room! This will cause you to lower your garment allowance.
Please refer to the Scrub Wearer Policy if you have any questions in regards to where you can and cannot wear scrubs. Ceil blue scrubs may NEVER be worn outside of the hospital and may only be worn in restricted areas.
Scrub stations will be loaded with the following scrub colors for each area:
- GI – jade green
- Emergency Services – jade green
- Labor and Delivery – ceil blue
- Peds/Maternal/Peds NICU – ceil blue
- 5th floor OSC – ceil blue
- Central Service – ceil blue
- 2nd floor OR common area – ceil blue and jade green
- 2nd floor OR - ceil blue
Where am I going?
ICE House
If you have a lecture in the ICE House, note that it is located located near the corner of South Avenue and Sims Place on Gundersen Health System's La Crosse Campus (1827 Sims Place). Use the main entrance, and go down to the Lower Level Simulation Lab upon arrival. You may change into scrubs at the ICE House or you may wear Jade Green scrubs to the ICE House.

Mailboxes in Med Ed
There is a mailbox for each block and 4th years in Medical Education, located by the Student/Resident Computer Work Room and Lounge. These boxes are used for many things including:
- Housing copies of BLT schedules
- Drop off tools and books after rotations
- Pick up tools and books before rotations
- Packets/copies for BLTs
- Anything the coordinators need to give you after hours or on your own time
The Student Program Coordinators also have a mailbox - this is a great place to leave required paperwork, evaluations, chocolate, etc. or anything you want to hand in!

Health Insurance
UW Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is accepted here at Gundersen Health System. If you need to be seen by a provider you are covered. It is important for you to contact the main SHIP office to let them know that you are doing an away rotation and where that rotation is being completed. They will document this so that if you do need to be seen, they can notify the insurance provider. It is also important for you to contact the SHIP office if you have been seen so that your bills are processed appropriately. We have been reassured that you will be covered if you need to obtain any care while you are here at Gundersen Health System.
Employee Assistance Program
If you are in need of free counseling services, our Employee Assistance Program will get you seen promptly and help you come up with a support plan. Your Clerkship Director or coordinator can get you connected, or you can call over privately for help yourself. EAP can help with all types of problems such as marital and family problems, depression, financial concerns, alcohol and drug abuse, and work related issues. Housing
Maintenance Issues
Report any maintenance problems you encounter by contacting your program coordinator, or if on a weekend, please call maintenance directly at (608) 775-5900. We will attempt to contact you before entering your unit, but may not always be able to. If not, we will leave a note on the door stating that we entered.
Internet
If you experience issues with the internet (connection, slow, etc.), please contact the Gundersen Health System Help Desk at (608) 775-3070. Please let them know which building you are staying in and they will be able to appropriately troubleshoot your issue. If you are staying in a town home and experience internet issues, please call (608) 775-6598 and indicate the issue you are experiencing (this internet is externally provided, therefore, a contractor will need to resolve the issue).
As a reminder, this is the Housing Agreement you signed. Please take careful note of checkout process.
Other
The Health Science Library is open to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's located on Floor 0.5 in the Heritage Building. You will need your badge to swipe in after hours.
Note: please only use the printers for work related materials.
MyHealth Fitness Room is located on the 2nd floor of the Heritage Building. It is open to you 24 hours a day! You will need to swipe in with your badge.
Gundersen's internal Gladiator website and EPIC can not be accessed from outside of campus. That includes in housing. You can only access it here in the hospital and clinics.
