EMPA Fellowship Curriculum
During your 18-month fellowship, you’ll expand your knowledge and refine the clinical skills needed to provide quality emergency medical care for patients of all ages.
Training curriculum
Our patient-focused training curriculum provides advanced education and hands-on experiences to develop your specialized emergency medicine skills, under SEMPA guidelines.
During your fellowship, you’ll gain experience working 40-50 hours weekly in Emergency Services alongside emergency medicine (EM) physicians, physician assistants and staff at Gundersen’s primary hospital in La Crosse, Wis. Additionally, you’ll cover monthly shifts in 2 Gundersen-affiliated Critical Access Hospitals, providing you with valuable rural emergency department experience.
To enhance your EM experience, you’ll rotate through a variety of areas including Anesthesia, Obstetrics, MICU, SICU, PICU, Interventional Radiology and EMS. Other curriculum highlights for EMPA fellows include:
- Trauma service in a Level II Trauma Center and regional emergency departments
- Annual wilderness medicine conference
- Annual in-house emergency ultrasound training
- ATLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP certifications
- Monthly simulation activities in our state-of-the-art simulation lab
- Weekly didactic sessions and the opportunity to instruct others
Wilderness medicine conference
As part of your fellowship experience, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in our annual wilderness medicine conference with other fellows, residents, Gundersen healthcare providers and community members. Hosted by our EMPA fellowship program with support from Continuing Medical Education, this dynamic 3-day/2-night outdoor educational outing is held late summer/early fall for ideal on-site camping. Past topics include altitude illness, hypothermia, hyperthermia, medical kit construction, marine medicine, infectious diseases, global/travel medicine, submersion injury, rope tying, thermal injuries, wilderness toxicology, envenomations, water source and filtration.
