In the heart of our community, a powerful movement is taking shape, offering hope and healing to those who need it most. Strive to Thrive, an innovative eight-week exercise and wellness program created in partnership with Emergency Services, Population Health, Exercise Physiology and a grant from Gundersen Medical Foundation and the Healthy Living Center at the La Crosse YMCA, is designed to empower adult patients who have visited Emergency Services due to depression or anxiety.
Recently established in January of this year, this program is more than just a series of classes; it is a beacon of hope and a lifeline for those seeking a path to better mental and physical health.
“We chose the name Strive to Thrive because it aligns with Emplify Health by Gundersen's vision to lead with love and courageously commit to a future of healthy people and thriving communities,” says Traci Segar, Emergency Services clinical nurse leader. “The program focuses on the whole person, recognizing that everyone is unique. This program is community-minded and highlights the importance of partnership between Emplify Health by Gundersen and the local YMCA Healthy Living Center in benefiting community wellness.”
A holistic approach to well-being
Each week, participants in the Strive to Thrive program engage in a 30-minute exercise session, followed by a 30-minute discussion on a specific wellness topic. These topics are carefully curated to address the multifaceted needs of individuals dealing with mental health challenges. From goal setting and mindfulness to nutrition, sleep, communication and time management, the program covers essential areas that contribute to an individual’s overall well-being.
A supportive community
The success of Strive to Thrive lies in its supportive and inclusive environment. Facilitated by a dedicated team of wellness coaches, community health workers and exercise physiologists, the program ensures that participants feel supported in every way all throughout their experience in the program.
“By implementing the Strive to Thrive program for patients, we are collaboratively enhancing mental health and coping skills across the region,” Segar says. “The comprehensive wellness programming proactively addresses mental health issues, aiming to reduce emergency room visits related to mental health crises.”
