As an Internal Medicine resident and later as a Hematology/Oncology fellow at Gundersen Health System, I had the amazing opportunity to rotate with the outpatient and inpatient Palliative Care teams. The inpatient experience is immersive and powerful as a trainee, as you have the opportunity to work closely with patients and their families during the end stages of their disease. This training is balanced by the outpatient experience, which offers a beautiful lens to all of the different support that is provided to our patients in the upstream stages of their disease. The Palliative Care leadership also thoughtfully considers the magnitude of this training and prioritizes trainee wellness through debriefing exercises.
