A new knee, close to home
Orthopedic specialty services help Boscobel man get back on his feet
When Boscobel resident Paul Bloyer discovered he could have knee replacement surgery and rehabilitation in his hometown at Gundersen Boscobel Area Hospital and Clinics, he stopped his search for the perfect facility.
"I love our local hospital and always recommend it to people," Paul says. He already had his other knee replaced at a different Gundersen Health System location in 2014 and was aware that traveling to and from appointments was time consuming. The thought of being just a short drive from all his care this time made repeating the process seem more manageable.
Paul scheduled his surgery for March 2019 with Edward Riley II, MD. Almost immediately after waking up from the procedure, Paul knew he'd made the right decision.
"That evening, the nurses got me up to walk short distances," Paul says. "The next morning, I used a walker and went up and down the hallway. I couldn't believe it." Paul returned home the following day with the help of his wife, Elaine, and started rehabilitation soon after.

With his physical therapist, he worked on restoring his strength, range of motion, alignment, balance and more.
"It was hard work, but worth it," Paul says.
As a dad, grandpa and great-grandpa, former firefighter, mayor and school bus driver, Paul was used to an active lifestyle. His knee replacement and physical therapy have allowed him to resume many activities with his family that he'd given up because of knee pain, including taking walks with Elaine. Hunting and fishing—two of Paul's favorite hobbies—also are options again.
"Surgery isn't for everybody, but when knee pain starts affecting your quality of life, that's when you need to seriously start thinking about knee replacement options," says Brenda Kreul, director of surgery, Gundersen Boscobel. "Most patients aren't looking to run marathons or play competitive sports. They just want to enjoy their daily activities without having to rely on somebody else's assistance."
Regaining that independence while avoiding a long commute to treatment makes the experience even sweeter, Paul says. "It was much better this time around having care close to home," Paul says. "Everything in Boscobel is right in one place and anywhere you need to go in the hospital or clinic is just a few doors away."
Plus, there's always a friendly face, no matter where you turn, he says. "The people who work there are friends," Paul says. "We know them personally. That makes a difference."
