Neonatal Intensive Care

Newborn babies who need close medical attention may need to stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in La Crosse.

Gundersen's Level III NICU combines advanced technology and trained healthcare professionals to provide specialized care for the tiniest patients of the Tri-state Region. A Level III designation means we have the specialists, technology and treatments to care for the tiniest and sickest newborns. That care begins even before they arrive in our La Crosse hospital - when they are on their way by helicopter or ambulance. Our Neonatal Transport Team is fully equipped to provide an ICU environment, monitoring and treating your baby during transport.

Our NICU offers private rooms for babies and their families, and connecting rooms for twins and triplets. The rooms were designed with the family in mind. Each room has an area where parents can sleep and stay near their infant at night, and a lounge is just down the hall, where families can gather.

Most babies in the NICU are:

  • Premature
  • Have low birth weight
  • Have a condition that requires special medical or surgical care
  • Twins, triplets and other multiples
  • Babies with medical conditions such as heart and respiratory problems, infections or birth defects

And when it’s time to take your baby home, our NICU team will work to make that transition as smooth as possible.
