Local woman comes home to doctor her community

Catherine Nelson, DO

Catherine Nelson, DO, grew up in Decorah. Now she's back, as a doctor, to care for the people in the town where she was born and raised.

"I am very excited to return to Decorah, my hometown! Decorah is such a beautiful community within the Driftless Region," comments Dr. Nelson. "There are so many opportunities to enjoy the beautiful landscape. I especially enjoy biking on the bike trail and kayaking on the Upper Iowa."

At Gundersen Decorah Clinic, Dr. Nelson provides the full spectrum of family medicine including obstetrics, clinic medicine and hospital medicine. She treats the entire family and also will be delivering babies.

"I am happy to be returning to my hometown and to be a part of an organization that promotes health and wellness and focuses on taking care of the community," says Dr. Nelson.

Dr. Nelson's education took her from undergraduate at College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., to Des Moines University for medical school. She served her residency at Verona Clinic and University of Wisconsin School of Medicine.

She's a Green Bay Packers fan. Volunteering within the community is important to Dr. Nelson. Her love outside of medicine is music: Dr. Nelson is a vocalist, violinist and pianist and she has already joined the Oneota Valley Community Orchestra.

"Decorah also is very supportive of music and art which have been passions of mine," she says. "I look forward to attending concerts and events within the community. I am also excited to once again be cheering for the Decorah Vikings and enjoying delicious Norwegian treats. My family also lives in the area and I am happy to be living close to family again."
