Gundersen Moundview Hospital and Clinics is now offering in-house 3D mammography, an improvement in both access to the critical screening and accuracy of the results.
Until recently, Gundersen Moundview has offered 2D mammography within its facilities, but used Gundersen’s Mobile Mammography Unit for 3D imaging. While the mobile unit made care convenient for patients in the Friendship area, it wasn’t always available, it was susceptible to weather or medical cancellations, and it can be difficult to access for some with limited mobility. Now, the in-house service is available Monday through Friday.
As opposed to 2D mammography that uses two x-ray images of each breast, 3D is made up of several images from different angles that compose a singular picture. The 3D process is also more comfortable for patients, as the compression exerted on the breasts is less intense. According to multi-modality technologist Erin Van Ert, who performs mammograms at Moundview, a 3D image can provide clearer details for patients with dense breast tissue, and cancer detection is much improved.
Gundersen recommends that women who are at average risk perform monthly self-exams at age 20 and yearly mammograms at age 40. To schedule an appointment in Gundersen Moundview’s Imaging Department, call (608) 339-8373. A patient may self-refer for mammograms as long as they have a provider, from Gundersen or elsewhere.
