Program Eligibility & Requirements

To ensure the safety of our patients and employees as a condition of employment, clinical privileges or program participation, Gundersen Health System (GHS) requires all staff to be fully vaccinated as defined by Employee Health Services for COVID-19 regardless of work location. In addition, all non-employee personnel, volunteers, residents, fellows, trainees, clinical and non-clinical contracted staff, students, researchers, temporary workers, contractors, and vendors, at any worksite or remote location, regardless of clinical responsibility or patient contact, are required to comply.

We accept and review residency applications only via the ERAS system. We will begin accepting applications mid-September, with our application deadline Nov. 1. All interviews will be conducted virtually.

Our program will be participating in the supplemental ERAS application offered through the AAMC’s ERAS program. Applicants will be required to complete the MyERAS application, and participation in the supplemental ERAS application is optional.

We do participate in the couples match through the NRMP.

We require that all applicants have passed USMLE or COMLEX Step 1 prior to submitting their application. In addition, we only review applications of individuals who have passed the USMLE or COMLEX exams on their first attempt.

We would like three letters of recommendation, two of which must be from internal medicine or internal medicine subspecialties.

We only accept applications from individuals who have graduated from medical school within the past 24 months. In the interim, applicants must have been engaged in meaningful clinical or research experience. International medical graduates must be ECFMG certified prior to starting their residency. U.S. clinical experience is not mandatory.

We sponsor H1 and J1 visas, and we are exempt from the H1 cap.

We do not offer observerships/externships for international medical graduates unless they have already been accepted into the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Gundersen Health System.
