Choose frames to flatter your face

A general rule of thumb when selecting eyewear frames is that a contrasting frame shape will generally complement the shape of your face. For example:

Oval-shaped face

TRY: Your face has a balanced proportion so you can wear most frame styles as long as the size of the frame is in proportion to your face. Go ahead and try bold shapes and fun colors and textures to suit your style.

AVOID: Geometric shapes

Round-shaped face

TRY: You want a frame that will make your face appear longer and thinner. Square, lightly angular or rectangular, and geometric shapes should do the trick.

AVOID: Round shapes

Square-shaped face

TRY: Because you have a strong jaw with a broad forehead and cheekbones, your best bets are gently curved, round, oval or rimless frame.

AVOID: Angular or square shapes

Oblong-shaped face

TRY: To help widen and shorten the appearance of your face, select frames that are horizontally short (they should not extend beyond the widest part of your face) with more depth from top to bottom. Try deep round or square, angular and geometric shapes.

AVOID: Wrap-around styles and wide shapes

Tapered- or Heart-shaped face

TRY: To balance a tapered jaw, choose rimless or other minimalist frames, light colors, oval or round, aviators, low temple.

AVOID: Big, bold styles

If you've already considered your face shape but could use a second opinion, talk to a Gundersen Health System optician. You'll receive professional advice and adjustments that you can't find online. Schedule an appointment at any of our eye clinic locations.
