How to reduce under-eye bags

Dear, Glamour:

It seems like every time I look in the mirror all I notice is my under-eye bags. It wasn't always this way. While I've had puffiness under my eyes in the past, lately I feel as if I look like I've been pulling all-nighters multiple times a week. Spoiler alert: I haven't stayed up past 10 p.m. in decades. Help! How can I get rid of this baggage?

Sincerely,

No time for baggage

Dear, No time for baggage:

First, know that you're not alone: Many people develop bags—also known as swelling or puffiness—under their eyes as they age. Genetics also can play a role, as well as lifestyle factors like:

  • Not getting enough sleep
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Not wearing sunscreen daily (sunscreen is your lifelong bestie in slowing down and preventing early signs of aging)
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Not eating a well-balanced diet

You mentioned your reasonable bedtime, so it's likely you're already aware of the importance of sleep in waking up looking well-rested. If you've also addressed the other lifestyle aspects mentioned above and aren't seeing results, or just want more noticeable results, there are several cosmetic treatments worth considering.

Chemical peels

Particularly well-suited for people in the 20s through their 40s, peels work to reveal a more youthful complexion. Some peels are mild and require little downtime. Others are more aggressive and produce dramatic results. Regardless, peels also can help reduce dark circles under the eyes, not just puffiness.

Lasers

Especially beneficial for people 50 and older who want to address under-eye bags, laser treatments are a great choice to tighten skin. Lasers improve tone and texture by stimulating collagen production and allowing anti-aging serums and other skincare products to work more effectively.

Professional skincare products

Using quality skincare products can make a big difference in decreasing swelling under the eyes, too. One highly recommended product by Gundersen skincare specialists includes ZO Hydrafirm® Eye Brightening Repair Crème, which works to instantly smooth the skin's appearance and rapidly reduce the appearance of puffiness.
