Vampire facial…is it really a thing? How does it work? Is one right for you? Whether you’ve been considering the beauty treatment or have never heard of it, our skincare technicians are demystifying the cosmetic service and explaining why it’s growing in popularity. Spoiler alert: It’s not as spooky as it sounds!

What is a vampire facial?

A vampire facial—also known as SkinPen® microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP)—is a cosmetic treatment that focuses on rejuvenating skin. A medical skincare technician at Gundersen uses tiny needles to stimulate collagen production. Afterward, PRP—taken from a sample of your blood—is applied to the treatment area to enhance results.

What are the benefits of a vampire facial?

Skin texture, pore size, fine lines, acne scarring and more all can be improved with a vampire facial. As Gundersen skincare technician Annie Holliday explains, the treatment brightens, helping anyone’s skin appear younger. “By reintroducing PRP back into the skin, cell turnover is encouraged, which leads to an increase of collagen and elastin production,” she says. Both collagen and elastin are essential for healthy skin.

How effective is a vampire facial?

Like many cosmetic treatments, more than one session may be needed to get your desired results. Gundersen skincare technician Lisa Green recommends four treatments, each spaced four weeks apart. Regardless of how many sessions your skin may need, SkinPen® microneedling with PRP is an effective way to give your complexion a boost. “It rejuvenates skin with minimal downtime, producing wonderful results and more youthful-looking skin,” Lisa says.
