Physical therapy is a safe and effective way to help you manage pain and maximize function.

You now have the option to pay cash for your appointment (and not bill insurance). Cash payment is required at the time of check-in.

We no longer require a referral for almost all physical and occupational therapy appointments.

Do I need a referral?

Gundersen Health System does not require a referral for Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy. The only time a referral is required is for patients with neurological conditions (e.g., Parkinson's disease).

What if my insurance company requires a referral?

Some insurance companies may require a referral for payment. If your insurance requires a referral, you may be able to pay cash for your appointment and forgo the referral.

If you are unsure whether your insurance requires a referral, please contact your insurance company regarding your physical and occupational therapy benefits.

Can I pay cash (and not bill insurance) for physical therapy?

In some situations, it can be less expensive to pay out of pocket than to go through an insurance provider. Cash pay services may be right for you if:

  • You have a high insurance deductible.
  • You have used all insurance-authorized therapy visits.
  • You are seeking therapy for one or minimal visit(s) and prefer to continue self-care at home.
  • You want to see a physical or occupational therapist without a referral (direct access).
  • You do not have government insurance.

Is anyone excluded from paying cash for healthcare services?

Patients with Medicare and government insurance policies are prohibited from participating in cash-based services. These patients may or may not be seen without a referral.

If I choose to pay cash, what else should I be aware of?

  • Paying cash (and not filing to insurance) means that your payments cannot go toward your insurance deductibles and may not qualify for using pre-tax dollars held for medical care (federal regulation).
  • You will be asked for your payment in full when you check in for your appointment.
