Many people with Parkinson's disease are at risk for developing speech and swallowing difficulties. To prevent and treat these issues, Gundersen offers two specialized programs developed by Parkinson Voice Project.
SPEAK OUT!® is a series of therapy sessions in which patients work with a speech-language pathologist on speech, voice and cognitive exercises. This unique and effective approach uses specialized materials to address the speech and language needs of people with Parkinson's disease. SPEAK OUT!® emphasizes speaking with intent and converting speech from an automatic function to an intentional act. Graduates of SPEAK OUT!® can continue their speech and language progress by transitioning to The LOUD Crowd®.
The LOUD Crowd®
For people with Parkinson's disease, daily speech-language practice at home and ongoing follow-up is necessary. The LOUD Crowd® is a maintenance program for people who have completed SPEAK OUT!®. It consists of weekly group sessions in which participants practice SPEAK OUT!® exercises and speaking with intent. The LOUD Crowd® meetings are hosted by a speech-language pathologist and offer accountability, camaraderie, education and support.
