Safe Place for Newborns

Gundersen’s Safe Place for Newborns program offers confidential, protective shelter, medical care and treatment to newborns whose parents are unable to care for them.

A mother or caregiver with the mother’s permission can leave the unharmed baby, up to 3 days old, with a hospital employee. We don't ask questions or call the police.

The person who drops off the baby will receive a medical background questionnaire that can be returned to the hospital. La Crosse County Human Services will place the newborn in foster care before adoption.

If you have questions about Safe Place for Newborns, contact Great Rivers 211 by dialing 2-1-1.
