Pediatric Sleep Medicine

Children sometimes have problems sleeping, but when those problems happen frequently or sleepiness interferes with learning or daily activities, it may be time for a trip to the Gundersen Sleep Center. Our sleep experts offer comprehensive evaluation and care for children who suffer from a sleep disorder. Your child may benefit from an Electroencephalogram (EEG) or sleep study to determine the cause of their sleep issues.

Sleep Studies

In some cases it may be necessary to monitor your child's sleep through a sleep study. A sleep study records your child's body functions while they sleep.

Results are used to help diagnose and treat the cause of a sleep problem, such as:

  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Sleep apnea (observed pauses in breathing at night or waking up gasping or choking)
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness causing problems learning or doing daily activities
  • Sleepwalking, talking or terrors

Our sleep disorder specialists are leaders in the field. In 1986, we became the first fully accredited sleep center in Wisconsin and, every year since, we have maintained accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

Pediatric Electroencephalogram (EEG)

An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that measures brain waves—the electrical activity in your child's brain.

An EEG may be recommended for your child to check for, or rule out, causes of seizures, sleep problems, brain infections or tumors. An EEG measures brain waves through small, round discs with wires (electrodes) which are placed on your child's scalp. The electrodes are not harmful. An EEG usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes.
