Learning & Developmental Services
Is your child struggling with learning or development? Some children have more difficulty developing the skills needed to be successful in everyday life. You recognize your child needs help, but you are not sure what to do. You may have tried many things, but nothing seems to work. You, a doctor, social worker or teacher may have concerns about one or more of these:
- Attention challenges
- Behavior problem
- Developmental delays
- Communication difficulties
- Interactions with other children, including making and keeping friends
- Learning troubles
- Emotional concerns, like seeming nervous, upset or angry
- Problems with vision, hearing or motor skills, which may affect learning and behavior
Getting started with Learning and Developmental Services
Learning and Developmental Services at Gundersen Health System will find the right team to help you and your child. We start by asking your specific concerns regarding your child. These answers will help provide the background we need to move forward. We will then let you know what further information and records we need for your child's evaluation.
When you contact us for the first time, we will ask you to fill out the Parent Questionnaire and Release of Information form. These forms need to be mailed back to the below address before we schedule any appointments.

Your child's assessment team
A licensed psychologist will meet with you to talk about your concerns. This will help best decide who else should be on your child’s assessment team. Other team members will be chosen based on your child's specific needs, and may include:
- One or more physicians who care for children (pediatrician or pediatric specialty provider)
- Experts in speech, language, motor skills and sensory issues
- Hearing or vision specialists
Evaluation, discussion and planning
The evaluation typically occurs over the course of several days. Following evaluation, the team's findings and recommendations will be shared with you. You may invite teachers, social workers, grandparents or others to attend this meeting. You will receive a brief report that you can take home that day, and have an opportunity to talk through any questions or concerns you may have. A longer, more detailed written report will be sent to you at a later date.
A financial counselor will work with you and your insurance company prior to the evaluation.
