Physical therapy in Caledonia keeps Myhre moving
When you're on the road for work every day, like Greg Myhre, 64, of Caledonia, the last thing you want to do is spend more time behind the wheel to access healthcare.
For years, that was the reality for Greg. On top of his full-time job as a field man with the Lanesboro Sales Commission, he also traveled 45-miles round trip every week for neurological physical therapy at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse.
"I spent about three and a half hours out of my day for a single physical therapy appointment," says Greg, who has been living with progressive multiple sclerosis since 2013.
In November 2018, his commute to physical therapy was reduced significantly when Gundersen Health System began offering specialized physical therapy at its Orthopedic Clinic in Caledonia (located at 405 South Highway 44/76).
"Having physical therapy close to home definitely saves me time. It takes me three minutes to get to therapy now, and I can park right in front of the clinic. I'm done in less than half the amount of time I used to spend on the road," says Greg who credits physical therapy to his continued mobility.
"If it weren't for physical therapy, I probably wouldn't be walking today," he shares.
Marguerite Costigan, Gundersen physical therapist and certified neurological clinical specialist, agrees. “Greg is very proactive and works extremely hard to improve his walking and ability to complete day-to-day activities. His commitment to follow through with recommendations and a home exercise program are allowing him to be so independent,” states Marguerite.
For Greg, that independence means living with this wife in their home, spending time with his children, playing with his granddaughter, mowing the lawn and working full-time. He looks forward to fishing this summer, too.
"I can't say enough about physical therapy at Gundersen—both the convenience of having it here in town and the difference it's made in my life."
