Stepping On: Falls Prevention

Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury, hospital admissions for trauma and death. Many older people have had a fall that may have shaken their confidence and may have resulted in an injury.

More than one third of adults, age 60 and older, fall each year. Of those who have fallen, 35 percent have become less active. Preventing falls and regaining confidence is vital in maintaining personal independence.

Gundersen offers Stepping On workshops to teach older adults techniques to prevent falls. The workshop meets for two hours each week for seven weeks, focusing on topics such as:

  • Balance and strength exercises
  • The role of vision in maintaining balance
  • Safe and proper footwear
  • Medication and falls
  • Staying safe out in the community
  • Home safety

Anyone who is age 60 or over, has fallen in the past year, is fearful of falling, living at home and not suffering from dementia would benefit from a Stepping On workshop.
