Medical Genetics
Our board-certified medical geneticist—specially trained to evaluate, diagnose, manage and treat individuals of all ages with inherited disorders—will work with your family to investigate a genetic cause for issues such as:
- Birth defects
- Developmental delays with or without dysmorphic appearance
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Hearing loss
- Known or suspected genetic disorder in the family
- Down syndrome or chromosome change
- Connective tissue disorders
- Certain heart disorders
- Certain neurologic disorders
- Inherited disorders affecting any part of the body
On the day of your initial visit, you will see both a medical geneticist and genetic counselor. The medical geneticist may:
- Examine you or your child
- Review your family medical history
- Order further testing, if needed (e.g. blood tests, X-rays or other tests)
- Analyze and interpret the results
- Develop a management or treatment plan
The medical geneticist is part of the comprehensive Genetic Services team at Gundersen Health System. They will work closely with you or your child's primary care provider, and other specialists, to provide the best overall care.
