Immunotherapy, sometimes called biotherapy or biologic therapy, is treatment that uses your body’s immune system to fight diseases such as cancer. It can work by either stimulating your own immune system to work harder or attack cancer cells, or by giving you man-made immune system proteins.

Next generation immunotherapy

As a patient at Gundersen Health System, you have access to proven immunotherapy drugs that have become the standard of care. You also have access to the latest immunotherapy drugs, called “next generation immunotherapy,” through Gundersen’s involvement in national cancer research trials.

In recent years, significant research has been devoted to developing next generation immunotherapy. These drugs appear to be able to induce long-term remission in patients whose cancer has:

  • spread from one part of the body to another
  • been heavily pretreated
