Conservative treatment options are available to treat neck and back pain. Talk with your primary care doctor or call us to see what treatment option is best for you.
Physical Medicine and rehab evaluation (PM&R) - Gundersen PM&R specialists can help you identify non-invasive techniques or pain-relieving injections to increase movement and independence. They can also offer guidance for physical or occupational therapy intervention and assist with medication management.
Chiropractic care – Chiropractic care is a non-surgical, drugless form of healthcare that seeks to optimize health and manage pain. Patients will often times feel an immediate reduction in pain and improvement in function. Available at the Gundersen Integrative Medicine Center and Gundersen Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
Physical therapy - Exercises learned during physical therapy can strengthen your spine, minimize your pain and reduce your risk of injury by improving your overall balance and flexibility. Available through Gundersen Physical Therapy.
Dry needling - Dry needling is aimed at lessening symptoms in those with chronic nerve pain. It involves multiple insertions of a filament needle into the muscle that surrounds a trigger point. The aim is to achieve a twitch response in the trigger point to release muscle tension and pain with minimal side effects. Available at Gundersen Sports Medicine and the Gundersen Integrative Medicine Center
Steroid injections – Steroid injections can offer relief for pain caused by irritated or inflamed nerves. We use X-ray during the procedure to ensure that the medication is delivered to the correct spot. Available at the Gundersen Injection Clinic
Nerve blocks - Nerve blocks are injections of medicine near the nerves that are the source of pain. By numbing the nerves and stopping the pain signals from reaching the brain, nerve blocks offer immediate relief. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, so you can get back to your daily life following your appointment. Available at the Gundersen Injection Clinic
Radiofrequency ablation – Our experts use X-ray to locate the affecting nerves. They then use heat to destroy the nerves and stop them from sending pain signals to the brain. Pain relief can last more than a year in some cases. You will be able to resume normal activities after just 24 hours. Available at the Gundersen Injection Clinic
Spinal cord stimulation - During this minimally invasive outpatient procedure, electrodes are implanted on your spinal cord and a generator is inserted under your skin. Electrical pulses from the generator are sent through the electrodes, blocking pain signals from reaching your brain. This treatment allows you to avoid side effects associated with traditional pain medications. Available at Gundersen Pain Management
