Expanded walking trail renamed Swift Creek Trail
A newly-renamed pedestrian trail on the Southside of La Crosse offers access to the area’s natural beauty and to La Crosse’s vibrant downtown and riverfront.
Gundersen Health System and city of La Crosse leaders helped unveil Swift Creek Trail at an event Oct. 11. Formerly the VIP trail, Swift Creek Trail runs from the northern point of Isle La Plume south to the Green Island Ice Arena, across South 7th Street, behind Bethany Lutheran Homes Eagle Crest South Assisted Living Center, along Swift Creek, and either north behind the Gund Brewery Lofts to South Avenue or east to Maple Street.
Gundersen staff and Powell-Poage-Hamilton Neighborhood residents voted on the new trail name earlier this year from eight finalists selected from more than 300 suggestions.
"Gundersen is happy to partner with the City of La Crosse on expanding this trail, and making it a public, city trail that provides better connectivity for everyone to our campus, to downtown La Crosse and to the exciting things La Crosse has to offer," says Scott Rathgaber, MD, Gundersen CEO.
The walking trail was originally developed and funded by a group of Gundersen employees as a place for employees to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise over their lunch hour.
