Healthgrades: Gundersen among America's 50 Best Hospitals

Achievement places La Crosse hospital in top 1 percent in the nation

America's 50 best hospitals

Once again, Gundersen Health System's commitment to high-quality care for our patients has been nationally recognized as among the very best available.

Healthgrades® recently announced Gundersen is among America's 50 Best Hospitals™ for 2017. This achievement places Gundersen among the top 1 percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide—for the fourth consecutive year.

"The consistency of this award speaks highly to the continued focus on excellence provided by our staff," says Gundersen CEO, Scott Rathgaber, MD. "Many other hospitals are making great strides in quality but we are keeping pace by improving our own results."

Healthgrades provides information on objective measures of hospital performance at, which allows consumers to compare their local hospitals online. No hospital can opt-in or opt-out of being evaluated, and no hospital pays to be evaluated. Mortality and complication rates are risk adjusted, which takes into account the differing severity of illness at different hospitals and allows for hospitals to be compared fairly

Healthgrades' recognition of Gundersen's excellence is a significant accomplishment. It tells our patients and our community that the care they receive here is among the best care in the entire country.

"It is gratifying to know that our efforts to provide high-quality care to our patients are supporting our mission to improve the health of our communities while placing us among the top hospitals in the nation," says Dr. Rathgaber.

Healthgrades analyzes the most current three years of publicly available Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services patient data for millions of people and from more than 4,500 hospitals in the U.S. For 2017, the evaluations are for calendar years 2013-2015. For this period, the data shows patients treated in hospitals achieving Healthgrades America's 50 Best Hospitals Award™ have, on average, had a 26.1 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive this award, as measured across 19 rated conditions and procedures where mortality is the outcome.
