Gundersen welcomes behavioral health consultant to Minnesota clinics

Jennifer McHugh, MSW, LICSW, provides integrated care as a behavioral health consultant at Gundersen Health System's Minnesota clinics—La Crescent, Houston, Spring Grove and Harmony. She is the first fulltime behavioral health provider to serve all four Gundersen Minnesota locations.

McHugh offers integrated behavioral health services, assessment and referral for patients and their providers to help with a variety of mental and medical health issues.

"I'm looking forward to meeting and hearing from new patients," says McHugh. "I'm excited to collaborate on patient care with my new colleagues. I'm also looking forward to learning about the new communities I'll be serving."

McHugh is a big city woman (raised until 12 outside Detroit, then in the Bronx, N.Y.) who has found her home among the rolling hills and farms of Rushford, Minn., where she and her husband are organic vegetable growers. They have three sons, one just out of college, one just getting started at college and one who's 13.

"Communities in Greater Minnesota have a need for mental health services just as more populated communities do," she says. "Everyone deserves access to healthcare, whether they have diabetes or depression. I have lived in both rural Winona and Fillmore counties. The people are great and the area is beautiful. Now I'll have a chance to learn even more about Southeastern Minnesota."

McHugh brings training and experience helping children, adults and families who have experienced complex trauma. "Because of my prior work as a Licensed Parent Educator in Minnesota and licensed childbirth educator and doula (birthing companion), I have a strong developmental perspective when it comes to mental health," says McHugh. "I think about things from both the individual and systems-wide perspectives."

The opportunity at Gundersen proved a perfect fit.

"I have heard great things about Gundersen from many people," she says. "During my interview I was struck by the dedication and warmth of the staff. I believe that we are healthiest when we care for both our minds and our bodies. Working at Gundersen gives me an opportunity to put that value into practice."
