Gundersen is proud to be a Baby-Friendly Hospital certified by the World Health Organization and United Nations Children’s Fund. That means our baby experts are here to support you on your breastfeeding journey. We know the process can be tough sometimes. We’ve helped a lot of mothers through it. Reach out to our lactation consultants with your questions.

While you’re breastfeeding:

  • Eat healthy foods with different flavors.
  • Add an extra 200 to 500 calories daily.
  • Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water daily to help your production.
  • Continue taking your prenatal or over-the-counter vitamins.
  • Limit caffeine to less than 2 cups of coffee or other caffeinated beverage daily.
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol. If you decide to drink an alcoholic beverage, nurse your baby before you drink and wait until you are no longer feeling the effects of the alcohol before nursing again.
  • Talk to your pediatrician if your baby has hives, wheezy breathing or green, mucous-like stools.
  • Ask your doctor if your medications are safe during breastfeeding.
