General Surgery Sub-Internship Application

As a medical student, you’ll serve an integral part of Gundersen’s surgical team alongside our General Surgery residents and faculty.

Application requirements: 

Gundersen receives more applications than it has educational placement opportunities for medical students looking for clinical rotations. Selection is determined by the overseeing clinical department and whether: 

International students

If you live outside the U.S., make sure your medical school is listed with COCA or LCME. Before applying, you must: 

  • Have passed the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) Level 1 
  • Be enrolled in an institution of higher learning  
  • If instruction at the home medical school is not in English, applicants must show demonstrated fluency in English with successful completion of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination within the last two years. Eligible students must show proof of a minimum score of no lower than 104. 

Affiliation agreements: 

Contractual affiliation agreements for Gundersen must be in place at least 1 month before clinical placement. There is no guarantee that a contract will be successfully negotiated. Students cannot be placed or start a clinical rotation and/or project until the contract is in place.
