Optometry in Ocular Disease with emphasis on Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation

The Optometry Residency in Ocular Disease with an emphasis on Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation launched in June 2018. Our team felt there was a prime opportunity to expose students to the outstanding learning environment, state-of-the art facilities and exceptional patient care provided at Gundersen Health System.

Program Mission Statement: The primary goal of the Gundersen Health System Optometry Residency is to provide a highly educational experience that exposes the Resident to cutting edge technology in a highly respected Ophthalmology/Optometry Clinic within a large, multidisciplinary healthcare setting.

This residency program is made possible through the support of Gundersen Medical Foundation, the Gundersen Eye Clinics and Ophthalmology/Optometry department. Drs. Gipp and Sterling are program co-directors of this one-year residency program.

The optometry resident sees her/his own patients and is responsible for their care and management, with the guidance of attending physicians.

At Gundersen, the optometry resident has the opportunity to:

  • Manage patients with traumatic and other acquired brain injuries at the La Crosse Eye Clinic
  • Work with Vestibular Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and several other specialties to coordinate care for patients with acquired brain injuries
  • Participate on inpatient rounds for patients who have suffered from acquired brain injuries
  • Work three days per week at Gundersen Regional Eye Clinics managing complex Ocular Disease cases
  • Participate in inter-professional education opportunities in Neurology, Radiology, Endocrinology, and Rheumatology
  • Teach and interact with Optometry Interns and Medical Residents
