Advanced GI MIS/Bariatric Fellowship Program

Gundersen Health System General Surgery offers a fully funded one-year post residency fellowship in minimally invasive bariatric surgery and advanced laparoscopy/robotic surgery. This fellowship is accredited by the Fellowship Council.

The fellowship provides extensive experience in the surgical management of morbid obesity with emphasis on laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. The fellow also participates in a multitude of other advanced laparoscopic/robotic procedures, such as laparoscopic antireflux surgery, laparoscopic colectomy, solid organ surgery, and hernia surgery, including the use of the da Vinci Xi Surgical System.

The fellow is involved in the comprehensive preoperative assessment of new bariatric patients, scrubs on all bariatric procedures and is involved in the postoperative management and follow-up of these patients. The fellow is also involved in the management of foregut patients to include extensive experience in paraesophageal hernia and antireflux operations. The fellow participates in resident education and teaches skill acquisition to general surgery residents in the training lab and operating room. The fellow also participates in research activities during the course of the year.

The Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery program provides a comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach to the bariatric patient. The team includes a physician assistant, registered dietitians, a program manager, a clinical coordinator, clinical psychologists, as well as a medical bariatrician and bariatric surgeons.

Upon completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be well prepared to establish a proper minimally invasive bariatric surgery and/or foregut program in an academic or private practice environment.
