EMPA fellowship program overview


  • 18-month program, in accordance with SEMPA guidelines
  • Fellows will work 40-50 hours per week while in the La Crosse, WI, Emergency Services department
  • Monthly shifts in two Gundersen-affiliated Critical Access Hospitals for a rural emergency department experience during the program
  • Trauma exposure
  • Anesthesia, obstetrics, MICU, SICU, PICU, interventional radiology, and EMS rotations
  • Annual wilderness medicine exposure
  • Annual in-house emergency ultrasound course
  • ATLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP certifications (if not already certified)


  • Level II ACS-verified Trauma Center
  • Stroke Center with 24/7 neuro-interventional capabilities
  • Chest Pain Center with 24/7 interventional cath lab capabilities

Patient volume and statistics

  • More than 60,000 combined emergency and urgent care visits
    • 29 percent emergency admission rate
    • 11 percent of patients are pediatric (<16-years-old)
    • 21 percent of emergency patients arrive by EMS
    • 357 trauma activations in 2018

  • Pharmacist available daily in the department
