Cardiac rehab: Get back on your feet faster

Regaining strength and stamina following a heart attack or heart surgery can be a challenge. But you don’t have to recover alone. Gundersen Moundview Hospital and Clinics offers cardiac rehabilitation, conveniently in Friendship, Wis.

Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised exercise program designed for patients with heart disease who have had an angioplasty, bypass or valve surgery, heart attack, stent placement or other heart problems within the past year.

"We create an individualized treatment plan for each patient to help improve their strength, exercise tolerance, heart function, overall health and quality of life," says Corrine Bettanin, RCP, CRT, supervisor of Cardiopulmonary Services at Gundersen Moundview.

The 12-week program includes exercise training, ongoing monitoring and education about heart-healthy living. For example, participants receive education on topics such as: nutrition and good eating habits; risk factor modification such as weight, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol; importance of emotional well-being and stress management; medications and following the prescribed medical regimen. Patients are also given tools to continue a heart-healthy lifestyle after completion of the program.

Not only does cardiac rehabilitation speed recovery, but it reduces the risk of future heart-related events by stabilizing, slowing or even reversing the progression of cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association.

"Having cardiac rehab services available close to home makes it easier for patients to follow through with their care and complete the full 12-week program," says Corrine. "We can accept patients from any hospital. They just need to ask their cardiologist for a referral to our services. The added benefit of being part of Gundersen Health System means there is a seamless continuity of care for patients between our hospital and other Gundersen facilities."
