Kim Przybylla and family

'I trust this place' Gundersen Whitehall Hospital delivers extensive expert care, close to home

Mason Przybylla needed his tonsils and adenoids surgically removed at just 3 years old. For the procedure and follow-up care, his parents turned to Gundersen Tri-County Hospital and Clinics Whitehall, just minutes from the family's home in Independence, Wis.

"He was being taken care of by my friends," says Mason's mother, Kim Przybylla. "And we didn't have to get up at 4 a.m. to drive to La Crosse." It wasn't the family's first visit to the facility. It was the same place providers looked after Kim during her pregnancies and delivered emergency care when she cut herself on a knife while saddling a horse.

It was the same place where Mason would return for an electrocardiogram when his nurse practitioner detected an irregular heart rhythm, X-rays when a four-wheeler rolled over his foot and weekend care for strep throat and ear infections.

"I trust this place with my whole heart," Kim says. "The people taking care of myself and my family genuinely care."

Gundersen Tri-County offers extensive services and exceptional care in Whitehall, a rural close-knit community where patients and providers cross paths at church, schools and grocery stores.

"You get quality care here by people who know you," says Mandy Juresh, RN, BSN, nurse manager, Emergency Department and Hospital, Gundersen Tri-County. "Our community members wish to be close to home when they have health concerns and procedures. They are our friends and relatives, and we give them the best care near where they live and where everything is familiar."

Inside these walls, highly trained and experienced staff provide around-the-clock emergency care, general and orthopedic surgery, imaging, heart and cancer care and women health services.

"It takes a special individual to work in rural medicine, and I believe the team we have in Whitehall is one of the best," Mandy says. "The practice of local medical care is personal for us, and we take pride in serving our community."

Other services available in Whitehall include:

  • Behavioral health
  • Bone and joint care
  • Brain and nerve conditions
  • Colonoscopies
  • Ear, nose, throat
  • Endocrine disorders
  • Hearing loss
  • Occupational and physical therapy
  • Podiatry
  • Pulmonary rehab
  • Sleep studies
  • Swing beds
  • Urology
  • Wound care
  • And more

For Gundersen Tri-County staff, it's about delivering the highest quality personalized care to the community, Mandy says. "When we see our patients after a knee surgery, healed up and dancing at local events like Beef and Dairy Days or Broiler Fest, we take pride in their recovery. They are our extended family," Mandy says.

For community members like the Przybylla family, which also includes Kim's husband, Darrell, and their daughter, Morgan, Gundersen Tri-County's Whitehall location provides convenient access to routine care, specialty services and emergency care.

"I see how hard these nurses and providers work," says Kim, who worked as a licensed practice nurse (LPN) for nine years before transitioning to a different role at Gundersen Tri-County.

"We are a small community with top-quality, smart people who are experts in providing specialized care."
