ORBERA offers patients a non-surgical weight-loss procedure
Many people identify health goals at the start of a new year. Better management of health, weight, eating or activity are among the most common goals. Gundersen Health System offers many options to support your patients in their efforts.
Gundersen Health System offers surgical options such as laparoscopic gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy procedures. But we also offer an effective non-surgical option: ORBERA intragastric balloon. It's an ideal choice for your patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 40 who have attempted more conservative weight-loss options without success.
Here's how ORBERA works: Under a general anesthetic, a soft, durable silicone balloon is placed in the stomach and filled with saline to about the size of a grapefruit. The balloon, now filling up much of the stomach, is left in for six months to reinforce proper portion control.
The intragastric balloon is used in conjunction with a yearlong supervised nutrition and behavior modification program. Clinical trial has shown an average weight loss that is 3.1 times greater over those six months than diet and exercise alone.
The intragastric balloon is an option for your patients who may not qualify for weight-loss surgery. It's also a medically supervised option for those who need to lose weight quickly to qualify for another surgery such as orthopedic surgery, or to improve outcomes as with fertility treatments.
Anyone considering a weight-loss procedure, including ORBERA intragastric balloon, should attend our free, one-hour informational seminar Understanding Your Weight Management Options. Registration is available online for the seminar, or call (608) 775-0055.
