Clinical telemedicine uses interactive video, audio and a secure, high-speed Internet-based connection to link your patients, at a regional clinic or hospital close to home, with a medical consultant at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse—in real time.

Clinical telemedicine is particularly beneficial for pediatric patients when illness, the family's schedule, weather and transportation may be a problem. Telemedicine gives your patients easier, timelier access to specialists like Gundersen registered dietitian Margie Ley.

Margie offers telemedicine visits about nutritional issues for pediatric patients with digestive health issues such as failure to thrive, inflammatory bowel disease, food intolerance and allergies, lipid management and weight management. She often consults in collaboration with pediatric gastroenterologist Victor Uko, MD, who also provides clinical telemedicine and outreach services.

"Telemedicine makes it easy for me to join in on Dr. Uko's outreach visits, so we can provide the patient with a complete plan of care without the need for a separate visit," explains Margie.

Margie works with many of our pediatric specialists for patients with chronic conditions that may have unique nutritional needs. "I'll work with you and your staff as the patient's healthcare team," she says. "Together, using clinical telemedicine, we can meet with a patient and family to review diet needs related to a diagnosis and treatment plan, monitor a special diet or discuss nutritional concerns."

Clinical telemedicine is becoming easier and easier to set up and use. The telemedicine cart is portable and can be wheeled to and from exam rooms or anywhere there is a suitable Internet connection. The cart is equipped with a room camera and a handheld patient exam camera—both deliver extreme clarity.

Margie, in La Crosse, can see the patient at your regional site as if in person. Similarly, you (or your staff), your patient and family can view and interact with Margie. Clinical telemedicine exams are not recorded, and the signals sent between locations are encrypted so transmissions are secure and private in compliance with HIPAA privacy regulations.

Margie is available for telemedicine consultations Monday-Thursday and some Fridays with patients at Gundersen clinics in Boscobel, Moundview, Richland Center, Sparta, Tomah and Whitehall.
