MedLink AIR now carries plasma
"Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death among people under age 45, but if trauma physicians could deliver plasma to injury victims within minutes of their arrival in the emergency room, more of them would stand a better chance of survival," reports the America College of Surgeons.
Gundersen is taking this one step further by carrying plasma in our MedLink AIR emergency medical helicopters. This means plasma can be administered to patients when needed in the field, saving precious minutes.
Plasma is essential in cases of trauma such as severe bleeding/blood loss, burns and shock, but is also used for intracranial bleeding and other types of hemorrhages, including patients with coagulopathies.
In addition, MedLink AIR has carried O negative packed red blood cells and tranexamic acid for years. These products can be administered to trauma patients to prevent or reduce bleeding and reduce the need for transfusions.
Another cutting-edge service, MedLink AIR can administer intralipid infusion for severe and unstable overdoses of lipophilic drugs that cause cardiotoxicity. This includes calcium channel blockers, beta-blockers, digoxin, local anesthetics, some antidepressants, antipsychotics and other mood stabilizers.
Gundersen's MedLink AIR is among only a small number of medical air transport programs providing this level of preparedness—a critical fact to keep in mind when requesting transport services for your patients.
