Patients who are missing a limb can now receive custom-made prostheses at Gundersen Health System. Board-certified prosthetist/orthotist Fahim Khan, CPO, MBA, began seeing patients at Gundersen in January.

Fahim brings with him more than 30 years of experience in the field, having worked in a variety of hospitals, rehabilitation centers and prosthetic clinics across the globe. He has received intensive clinical and practical training in the prescription, design and technology of manufacturing, fitting and use of prosthetics and orthotics.

"For years, our orthotists have designed, created and fitted custom-made splints, braces and orthotics but this is the first time we have a dedicated prosthetist on staff to serve the needs of patients with missing limbs. Having a prosthetist in-house will be much more convenient and cost effective for our patients since we won't be contracting out this work," says Butch Bobenmoyer, clinical manager, Gundersen Therapy and Industrial Rehabilitation.

Fahim sees patients of all ages who may have:

  • Been born with a missing limb
  • Had a limb amputated due to disease
  • Lost a limb in an accident or during military service

He works with patients to assess goals for their prosthesis, create and fit the prosthesis, and provide follow-up care and adjustments.

"Working with people is my primary goal. This means having a great deal of patience and understanding toward vulnerable social groups like the elderly and disabled. Empathy is the key toward good-quality healthcare and patient satisfaction. This is not only necessary when dealing with patients but also with their families," says Fahim.
