Education in Gundersen's simulation lab

Nurse Residency Program

All registered nurses hired at Gundersen Health System with less than 12 months of acute/inpatient care experience take part in the Nurse Residency Program.

It provides an enriching, supportive, and interactive educational environment for nursing graduates to transition into their new professional roles within our integrated health system while exposing them to and fostering their interest in key clinical and professional practice topics.

Program highlights

  • Connects "book knowledge" to real-life clinical challenges and decision-making
  • Embraces caring at the patient side (Caring Science Theory) while providing clinical resources and practices guidelines
  • Provides ongoing support from leadership and peers
  • Broadens understanding of healthcare delivery and inter-professional collaboration
  • Encourages professional growth and development by inter-weaving Gundersen’s Nursing Professional Framework into practice

Program format

Nurse residents attend educational sessions:

  • Simulation lab
  • Medical response and emergency situations
  • System review Including but not limited to: Neurology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Respiratory, Skin/Wound
  • Green initiatives and environmental stewardship
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Legal aspects of documentation and care
  • Bariatric basics
  • Conflict engagement
