Job Description:

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of a pharmacist, a pharmacy technician organizes medications for dispensing to patients by reading medication orders and/or prescriptions, preparing labels and/or bags, calculating quantities, and compounding sterile and/or non-sterile products. A pharmacy technician participates in medication dispensing and/or delivery while maintaining pharmacy’s medication management and infection control procedures, policies and regulations.  A pharmacy technician will be assigned to a specific area of practice and responsibilities will be applicable to that area.

Provides distributive pharmacy services and technical support for the pharmacist.

Responsibilities:

Refills and maintains automated dispensing systems.

Prepares orders and maintains inventory for the pharmacy department.

Repackages bulk medications.

Receives and stores incoming supplies.

Serves as liaison between pharmacy, patient and health professional by providing information as necessary.

Complexity of Work:
Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed largely in a pleasant hospital environment. 

Office/lab type environment.

Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.

Occasionally exposed to hazardous material such as needle puncture, blood and body fluids.

Personal Protective Equipment:
Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Licensure / Certification / Registration:
Required Credential(s): One or more of the following:

Pharmacy Tech credentialed from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) obtained within 6 Months (180 days) of hire date or job transfer date.

Pharmacy Tech credentialed from the National Healthcare Association obtained within 6 Months (180 days) of hire date or job transfer date.

Education:
High school diploma/GED with 2 years of experience, or Associate's degree, or Technical degree
required.

Work Experience:
None required.

Populations Served:
No Responsibility to treat or care for patients

    Physical Requirements:

    Frequent walking, standing, sitting, reaching, manual/fine dexterity, grasping, and hearing-close distance.

    Vision – near.

    Occasional bending, twisting, crawling, kneeling, squatting.

    Ability to lift/carry and push/pull up to 50 lbs
