Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides comprehensive hospital-based pharmaceutical support and oversees all aspects of pharmaceutical services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides specialized pharmaceutical services to improve drug usage and therapeutic outcomes, including, but not limited to advising physicians on issues concerning drug therapy, the inherent toxicity of drugs and their side effects, as well as assisting in the prescription of appropriate doses for appropriate indications.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with medical, administrative, and nursing staffs.
  • Individualizes medication regimes using sound principles, accounting for pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic variations in drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination with responsibility for establishing and continually improving the delivery of pharmaceutical care to patients.
  • Prepares and/or oversees the preparation and dispensing of prescription medications to patients and makes decisions regarding generic/therapeutic substitutions.
  • Oversees and is responsible for acquisition, storage and distribution of pharmaceuticals throughout the organization.
  • Provides additional support and vision when developing and implementing long-term pharmaceutical goals, the purchase of equipment, and the provision of pharmacy services.
  • Maintains appropriate records as required by law or by the organization.
  • Monitors and reports on the use of pharmaceuticals within the institution.  This includes, but is not limited to medication errors, adverse reactions, drug use, evaluations, and special requests via the pharmacy director.
  • Investigates and takes appropriate actions to resolve pharmaceutical issues throughout the hospital, nursing home, and clinics.
  • Maintains knowledge of current Infection Control Issues and practice.
  • Maintains technician supervision and coordination in the absence of the pharmacy manager.

Additional Duties
  • Serves as an information resource for affiliated and non-affiliated entities in an effort to provide comprehensive patient care.
  • Contributes to the professional attitude and appearance of the pharmacy by consistently maintaining a patient-safety-focused environment.
  • Performs other duties as necessary or as assigned.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy, additional education preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year hospital experience.
  • Hospital pharmacy residency preferred.
  • Working knowledge of clinic based operations (vaccinations, medication sampling, supply requirements, etc.) preferred.
  • Licensed to practice in the State of Wisconsin.

Work Relationship:

  • Reports to the Manager, Pharmacy.
  • Works closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare workers.
  • Works with department managers, administration, and almost all employees within the organization.
  • Frequent contact with patients.
  • Occasional contact with vendors, public, civic organizations, regulatory agencies and other provider organizations.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed largely in a pleasant hospital environment. 
  • Office/lab type environment.
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Occasionally exposed to hazardous material such as needle puncture, blood and body fluids.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent walking, standing, sitting, and hearing-close distance.
  • Vision – near.
  • Occasional bending, twisting, crawling, kneeling, squatting, reaching, manual/fine dexterity, grasping.
  • Ability to lift/carry and push/pull up to 50 lbs.
