Program Overview:
- Candidates accepted into the GHS Medical Assistant (MA) Trainee Program will earn an income while simultaneously beginning enrollment in the Penn Foster MA program.
- Candidates must apply for the MA Trainee position in Workday.
- Acceptance into the MA Trainee role will require a 1-year employment commitment to Gundersen.
- Upon completion of the Penn Foster program and passing their MA certificate examination, candidates must commit to a 1-year MA placement in the department where training occurred. Candidates will receive MA certification prep material from Penn Foster as well as a voucher to cover their exam fees.
- The MA Trainee is expected to maintain a 0.75-0.9 FTE paid position with the onset of the program. (You must be able to train at a 0.9FTE for the first 6 weeks).
- Candidates will have a unique opportunity to include blended education and on-the-job training.
Penn Foster (PF) Partnership and Candidate Experience:
- Candidates will be supported through a collaborative partnership with Penn Foster, an online college that provides specialized MA classes and curriculum to support our GHS MA Trainee students.
- On average, the length of program completion is around 8-12 months however, the program can be completed within 6 months.
- Course curriculum provides an asynchronous format for flexibility and meeting department staffing needs.
- A full Penn Foster scholarship is provided by GHS for the MA Trainee, including books and other required educational material. 1. GUNDERSEN makes no representation and is providing no tax or legal advice as to the tax consequences of this policy or its application. Each employee receiving the scholarship is responsible for his/her own tax reporting. 2. GUNDERSEN requires employees receiving this fully funded educational scholarship to continue employment at GUNDERSEN for a minimum of one year following the start of their MA Trainee role and the Penn Foster program. Employees not fulfilling this commitment must reimburse GUNDERSEN for tuition paid on a prorated basis. The amount due to GUNDERSEN must be paid in full within 30 days of their last day of employment or make alternative payment arrangements prior to termination of employment. 3. No exception to the policy will be made without the approval of the chief human resource officer.
- MA Trainees are required to complete 160 hours of clinical hands-on education to fulfill program externship requirements.
- Candidates are responsible to meet both GHS MA (dept.) commitments, along with Penn Foster class responsibilities (e.g., fulfill course deadlines, class objectives, clinical hours).
- Individuals will receive ongoing support from the Department of Nursing, department preceptors, and GHS leadership resources; ongoing check-in to assess performance and experience with Penn Foster will also occur. To provide additional support, Professional Development Nurses will provide routine support on MA Trainee basic job responsibilities.

- Selected candidates will have the opportunity to work in a deemed high priority GHS ambulatory department while going through the PF program.
Job Description:
While partnering with a Medical Assistant, the Trainee will perform job-related duties as delegated by and under the general supervision of the clinician and Registered Nurse. The Medical Assistant Trainee will assist in meeting the individual and age-specific needs of the patients and families/significant others with the primary goal of extending the student experience and focusing on learning opportunities related to basic functions of the Medical Assistant role. This is a temporary role that will last up to eighteen months.
Major Responsibilities:
1. Completes Gundersen Health Systems (GHS) orientation and education requirements, maintains competency and practices and contributes to the GHS Mission and Strategic Plan
2. Performs responsibilities according to GHS’s phased Medical Assistant Trainee’s competency-based learning and tiered skills acquisition model (TSAM)
3. Advances through MA program’s curriculum while simultaneously completing competency verification for applicable skills
4. Assists patients with transportation to appointed departments by safely utilizing wheelchairs and proper body mechanics
5. Demonstrates respect for each individual through providing person centered care
6. Uses effective, authentic communication skills while interacting with patients, families, and all members of the healthcare team
7. Promotes a safe and healing environment for patients, families, and co-workers
Education and Learning:
REQUIRED
High School Diploma or equivalency
Medical Assistant Trainee must be enrolled in a Medical Assistant program within one month of hire and must complete the program within eighteen months of starting the role
Work Experience:
REQUIRED

DESIRED
Six months experience in a healthcare setting
License and Certifications:
REQUIRED
Current Infant-Adult Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (with hands on learning) from one of the following programs; American Heart Association or American Red Cross. needed within 6 weeks of hire.

Category I - All Employees in this job title have a reasonably anticipated risk of occupational exposure to blood and/or other potentially infectious materials.
Environmental Conditions:
