Gundersen Health System is hiring for a full-time, station-based Critical Care Paramedic position, offering a 24/48 schedule. 

Base pay starting between $21-$31/hour depending on experience. Our 56 hour work weeks on the 24/48 schedule rotation means GHS Ambulance Critical Care Paramedics can expect to make between $69,800-$103,000 per year with opportunities to pick up additional shifts for additional earnings!

This position will be based at the new Gundersen Health System Ambulance facility in Tomah, WI with the ability to pick up shifts in other regional bases as desired.

Job Description:

Responds to emergent and non-emergent requests for emergency medical assistance in an Interfacility Transfer Service, for critical patients transported to a higher level of service and requiring care beyond that in the scope of a license paramedic, or when patient criticality meets criteria for air transport and air services are unavailable, operating under the guidance of local medical direction.

Major Responsibilities:

1.    Demonstrate the skills and knowledge of a Critical Care Paramedic per the standards set forth by the United States Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety and Administration, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Iowa Bureau of Emergency and Trauma Services, the Minnesota Emergency Medical Service Regulatory Board, the National Registry of EMTs, and the EMS Medical Director.
2.    Demonstrate the ability to independently initiate and maintain medical procedures, medications, and evaluations beyond the scope of the paramedic while functioning as the sole practitioner in the ambulance setting. Must be able to operate and troubleshoot a ventilator, patient sedation, noninvasive position pressure ventilation, chest tube monitoring, and monitoring of central lines. Possesses knowledge of medications outside of the paramedic scope and multiple medicated infusions.
3.    Demonstrate the ability to render competent and clinically proficient patient care.
4.    Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of, and compliance with, all protocols for medical care per Gundersen Health System Ambulance policies and local Medical Control.
5.    Demonstrate the attitude of a Health Care Professional to include, but not be limited to maintaining a clean appearance; demonstrating courteous, professional and ethical behavior; and demonstrating the ability to work cooperatively with other members of the EMS Health Care System.
6.    Demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to inspect, safely operate, and maintain an emergency vehicle, including possession of a current and valid driver’s license, and demonstrate knowledge and compliance with all State laws pertaining to the safe operation of an emergency vehicle.
7.    Demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to inspect, safely operate, and maintain all equipment and tools relevant to a Paramedic.
8.    Demonstrate ability to function in an extended shift (24 hours or greater) environment and be able to constructively utilize down-time between responses or transfers.
9.    Demonstrate willingness to follow safety and fatigue guidelines including reporting of fatigue as outlined in policy.
10.    Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of, and compliance with, Gundersen Health System Ambulance and local communications policies and procedures.
11.    Demonstrate the ability to communicate patient information to other members of the health care profession.
12.    Demonstrate the ability to communicate information through the proper chain of command, to the management and other employees of Gundersen Health System Ambulance.
13.    Demonstrate knowledge and compliance with local, state and regional emergency medical dispatching system operations.
14.    Demonstrate the ability to accurately and completely document information required by Gundersen Health System Ambulance, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Iowa Bureau of Emergency and Trauma Services, the Minnesota Emergency Medical Service Regulatory Board, and local Medical Control.
15.    Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of, and compliance with, all Gundersen Health System Ambulance policies and procedures.
16.    Demonstrate a sincere desire to continually improve and upgrade the skills and knowledge of the emergency medical profession.
17.    Demonstrate the ability to document and maintain a record of all continuing education credit hours on the form(s) specified by Gundersen Health System Ambulance, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the Iowa Bureau of Emergency and Trauma Services, the Minnesota Emergency Medical Service Regulatory Board, the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and local medical control.
18.    Assures vehicles and stations are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion.
19.    Performs additional tasks as assigned by Gundersen Health System Ambulance Lead Paramedics and management.

Education and Learning:

REQUIRED

High school or equivalency + Approved Critical Care Paramedic Program

ICS 100, 200 and 700 certificates required within 60 days of hire

Work Experience:

REQUIRED

At least 3 years of experience as a licensed Paramedic

License and Certifications:

REQUIRED

  • Must have a critical care endorsement paramedic license in either Iowa or Wisconsin to begin employment, with critical care endorsement paramedic licenses in Iowa and Wisconsin required within 60 days of the hire date
  • National Registry of EMTS as a National Paramedic (NRP)
  • Minnesota Paramedic License required within 60 days of hire
  • Valid Wisconsin, Minnesota or Iowa driver’s license
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Current Infant-Adult Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (with hands on learning) from one of the following programs; American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Certified Emergency Vehicle Operation (CEVO) within 60 days of hire date
