Job Description:

The Cardiac Sonographer performs high quality m-mode, 2-D Doppler, and color flow echocardiography. Approximately 80% of the volume is adult patients and 20% is pediatric patients. Some sonographers learn to perform fetal echocardiograms. Perform stress echoes and assists cardiologist with Transesophageal Echocardiograms.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Ability to operate all cardiac ultrasound equipment including real-time m-mode, pulse-wave, continuous-wave and color flow Doppler.

2. Ability to perform high quality diagnostic echocardiograms on adult and pediatric patients using all available modalities. Some will need the ability to perform high quality diagnostic echocardiograms on fetal patients.

3. Ability to perform all the modalities of the Echo Department to include: TEEs, and Stress Echoes.

4. Performs contrast imaging under the direction of a cardiologist.

5. Responsible for administering echo contrast agent (Definity or Optison) to improve the delineation of the LV endocardial border when requested or indicated.

6. Responsible for administering agitated saline contrast in patients when questioning an atrial septal shunt or intrapulmonary shunt when requested or indicated.

7. Develop an intricate working knowledge of all cardiac anatomy and its variances.

8. Responsible for designated measurements needed on all exams along with designated paperwork and data entries.

9. Demonstrates cross-sectional anatomy through proper patient positioning and transducer selection to determine normal from abnormal anatomy. Extends the scope of the exam to appropriately investigate pathology and symptoms.

10. Provide interpreting physicians with oral and/or written summary of exam findings. Contributes technical, professional knowledge, and observation to the final diagnosis.

11. Assume responsibility of proper patient care during exam.

12. Provide general maintenance and cleaning of Echo Lab and Echo equipment.

13. Rotate through the "on-call" schedule on nights and weekends.

14. Rotate through the mobile Echo schedule.

15. Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization and department.

16. Performs Intravenous Therapy starts and DC Intravenous Therapy as needed.

17. Performs other job-related responsibilities as requested.

Education and Learning:


Post High School education in a specialized field:

Graduate of an approved or accredited school of Echocardiography or a related field.

Work Experience:


6 months Cardiac Sonographer internship successfully completed.


1 year echocardiography ultrasound work experience.

License and Certifications:


Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer - Adult Echocardiography (RDCS-AE) or Cardiovascular Credentialing (CCI) within one year of hire date

Current American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider CPR certification; Heart Saver, Rescue and Military training network CPR; or the American Red Cross CPR certification (CPR) except Citizen and Animal classes
