Gundersen Boscobel to Go RED for Women: Please join us!

Boscobel schools winning entry last year

Last year's winning photo from Go RED for Women came from Boscobel Schools.

February is American Heart Month, and the kickoff event for this month-long initiative will take place on Friday, February 2, with an event called Go RED for Women Day.

The national symbol for Go RED for Women Day is a red dress, representing both women and heart disease awareness. In recognition of this important event, Gundersen Boscobel Area Hospital and Clinics will "Go RED," as we do each year, by asking staff to wear RED on Friday, February 2. It is our hope again this year that, as we begin American Heart Month, Go RED for Women Day will extend beyond Gundersen Boscobel and will be a community-wide event.

Go RED for women is intended to empower women to take charge of their heart health. It challenges them to know their danger for heart disease and to take action to reduce their personal risk. It also gives them the tools they need to lead a heart healthy life. To truly "Go RED," women should (1) follow an exercise routine, (2) eat a healthier diet, (3) visit their doctor for important tests and (4) influence others by talking about heart health.

Historically, heart disease and heart attacks have been predominantly associated with men. However, heart disease and stroke are actually the number one killers of women. Since 2003, Go RED for Women has been the American Heart Association's initiative to raise awareness and dispel the myth that heart disease doesn't affect women.

Please consider wearing RED on Friday, Feburary 2, and, if you do, please submit pictures by e-mail to Whether you are an individual, a classroom, a community organization or a local business, you can make a difference by going RED and also by taking the time to explain why you have chosen to do so. You can also win prizes for joining with us. Prizes will be awarded for the most creative pictures submitted, and we will also have a drawing from all pictures submitted, so truly anyone who participates has a chance to win. Some pics will also be shared on our Facebook page and website.

Go RED for Women Day is at the beginning of an important month-long event to raise awareness about heart help. Please consider participating in helping us begin this important month-long campaign.
