Gundersen Boscobel celebrated Lab Week

The week of April 24-30 was designated as National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week to raise awareness of the clinical laboratory profession. Since laboratory professionals often work behind the scenes, few people know much about the critically important testing that laboratory personnel perform each and every day. Gundersen Boscobel Area Hospital and Clinics is using this week to help educate the public on how important this occupation is for the healthcare industry.

It is estimated that more than 70% of all medical diagnostic and treatment decisions are based on laboratory results. Almost everyone has had a medical test—more than 9 billion are performed each year. Laboratory personnel commonly test blood, urine, other body fluids and tissue cells to help screen and diagnose disease, aid in a patient's treatment, and monitor the effectiveness of a treatment course and its possible side effects. Gundersen Boscobel's laboratory staff handles patients of all ages and our staff of eight completed over 66,000 tests in 2016. These highly trained "Detectives of Disease" are responsible for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the information they report by adhering to strict procedures for proper specimen collection, processing, analysis and delivery of the patient's test results.

Gundersen Boscobel's laboratory is a vital part of the healthcare team, and it provides fast, accurate, quality results for the community it serves.  In addition to our hospital, the GBAHC laboratory provides reference laboratory testing services for the InHealth Free Clinic, Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Fennimore, Grant County Nurses, Hospice and community nurse midwife practices. In addition, we partner with local businesses to help them keep safe working environments by providing pre-employment, random and post-accident drug and alcohol testing services. The Gundersen Boscobel laboratory is led by Director Judy Dayton.

Please join us in saluting our Gundersen Boscobel Area Hospital and Clinic Laboratory Professionals for the vital role they provide, each and every day!
