"Stepping On" Falls Prevention

Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury, hospital admissions for trauma, and death. Many older people have had a fall experience that may have shaken their confidence and may have resulted in an injury.

More than 1/3 of adults 65 years of age and older fall each year. Of the individuals who have fallen, 35% have become less active. Preventing falls and regaining confidence is vital in maintaining personal independence.

The Gundersen Stepping On workshop teaches older adults about fall prevention techniques. The workshop meets for two hours per week for seven weeks.

Participants will learn about fall prevention topics that focus on:

  • balance and strength exercises
  • the role of vision in maintaining balance
  • safe and proper footwear
  • medication and falls
  • staying safe out in the community
  • home safety

Anyone who is 65 or over, has fallen in the past year, is fearful of falling, living at home and not suffering from dementia would benefit from participation in the Stepping On workshop.

The Stepping On workshop is typically held every spring and fall. For more information about this fall prevention program, please call (608)775-2011.
