More childhood injuries occur in the summer months than any other time of the year. At Gundersen Health System during 2005-2007, 52.2% of traumatic injuries to children 14 and under occurred in the months of May, June, July and August.
To reduce the occurrence of unintentional injuries in the summer, La Crosse Coulee Region Safe Kids has partnered with the La Crosse Loggers to hold a program called Slide into Safety with the Loggers.
This one day program offered to third grade students from schools in La Crosse and surrounding communities is held at the Loggers Stadium. Slide into Safety utilizes educational and interactive activities that focus on the major risks associated with summer hazards. Children rotate through safety stations which focus on high risk areas such as wheeled sports, motor vehicle, safety in and around water, and much more.
The program's goal is to provide children with the knowledge they need to make good choices and encourage personal responsibility for staying safe in order to reduce and prevent injuries.
