Safe Place for Newborns

Through our Safe Place for Newborns program, Gundersen Health System offers confidential, protective shelter, medical care and treatment to newborns whose parents are unable to care for them and might otherwise abandon them.

The program follows a new Wisconsin law. It allows a mother the option to leave her unharmed baby, up to 3 days old, with a hospital employee. No questions asked - not even your name. Police will not be called. A person other than the mother, acting with the mother's permission, can also bring a newborn to the hospital.

The person who drops off the baby will receive a packet that includes a medical background questionnaire. He or she can complete the questionnaire and return it to the hospital. La Crosse County Human Services will take custody of the newborn and place the newborn in foster care while an adoption plan is being made.

If you have questions about Safe Place for Newborns, contact Great Rivers 211 by dialing 2-1-1 or toll free in Wisconsin, Minnesota or Iowa at (800) 362-8255.
