Alternatives to LASIK
Even if you are not a candidate for LASIK or other laser vision correction procedures, Gundersen eye surgeons may be able to offer you other safe and effective alternatives such as:
- Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is similar to LASIK in that a laser is used to reshape the cornea and change its focus. Instead of being performed under a flap like LASIK, it's done on the surface of the cornea. PRK is less common than LASIK because of a longer healing process, so it's generally performed when surface disease of the cornea makes LASIK not heal as well.
- Clear Lens Extraction (CLE) involves removing the natural lens from the eye and implanting a lens that permanently corrects any optical errors, offering a full range of near and far vision without the need for glasses.
- Implantable Intraocular Lenses (Phakic IOLs) are an option for people who are highly nearsighted or have corneas that are too thin. The surgeon makes a small incision in your eye to insert the tiny, flexible lens implant between the iris and the eye's natural lens. The lens can be removed if necessary and contains an ultraviolet blocker to protect your vision from harsh light.
